FILM STILL EXPERIMENTS USING MIDJOURNEY

Central themes: melancholia, love, sonder, identity, space, silence, solitude, secretsThese “film stills” are visualizations of plotlines, scenes and scenarios that are yet to be produced. They’re also experiments in prompt-writing and AI image generation -- an attempt to converse and understand these tools that will one day become a key player in storytelling and story-creation.

I remember when my prompts generated these images. I was both mesmerized and unnerved by how raw and emotive they looked. I wanted, so badly, for these women to be real. For them to be living, breathing beings that I could work with and get to know. It felt taboo, blasphemous almost, to feel this way. Yet I couldn’t help myself from seeing something human in them.

One of the beautiful things about working with Midjourney has been the chance to give a visual home for concepts that only exist as a scene or as a few lines. I have pages of lines and scenes that exist on its own, strands of separate moments that haven’t yet been woven into a story. Creating these stills is a chance for these “orphaned moments” to find a space to breathe.

I love how sapphic Midjourney can be. There is something so lush and queer about the tool. Many of the characters that are born from my prompts feel queer -- I don’t know what it is that I wrote into the prompt that generated these tonalities. I’m a fan though.

i call myself a fickle writer to celebrate creativity that is emotional and unencumbered by industry speak and career-obsessiveness.
